CARNIVORE Activated

Wrought

New member
Just a heads up. I saw this on the news last night.
FBI's Carnivore is a program that monitors net communication and can be used to find messages that have flagged content. Right now they say it is to be used to hunt the terrorists, but once that's done......

Damn double edged sword I tell ya. I want them to get the terrorists, but its other uses worry me.

i feel the same way as Zyglamail. Get the terrorists but not us.

I agree that we need to get the terrorists but this whole thing is opening the door for government intrusion. It plays right into the governments hand of wanting to have the ability to covertly know everything you do, say, buy, etc. Not to mention how many government jobs this whole terrorist incident is ALREADY creating. The FBI says they need more agents. The CIA says they need more. They are going to create terrorist task forces in every major city. They will have a federal agent on every flight. And this is just 1 week old. The terrorists goal was to take away our freedom. I do believe they have succeeded in many ways that we will not realize for years to come.

Dont worry bros, George Spellwin's encrypted server is located outside the US so as long as you rely on an Hushmail/elite account no problems....

actually that makes it worse carnivore focusses on International communications. Between the US and other countries

yep, plus any country that supports the US (ie. almost everybody) will give permission for this type of information gathering activity, and with this new level of international cooperation an overseas server is no guarantee against anything anymore.

yeah here's an opinion for you...

Government intrusion my ass...

If the cost of the govt being able to track terrorists and other loonies better is for them to be able to scan for email msgs containing a list of flagged words then so be it.

Roids are illegal, we all know that. I support the governments ability to track illegal activity that occurs on the internet 100%. Whether we think roids should be illegal or not, and whether we choose to bend the law a little is another story.

Ppl that get paranoid about government intrusion usually are involved in something illegal.

Let's not get into a slippery slope argument that this will only lead to 'big brother' activities by the 'state' if left unprotested.

The government doesn't do things to be a pain for the fun of it. If something is illegal then of course it should be monitored and stopped, be it drugs, weapons, bombs, child porn etc etc.
