Background on Bill Roberts? Educate me, please.

I see that Bill Roberts is a respected figure concerning AAS and their use. I've read many of his articles myself. Where does he get his credentials? In-the-trenches experience? A degree? He seems to know his stuff, but I was wondering where he's coming from. Thanks.
