I've heard of St. johns Wort, just wanted some opinions if any of you have tried anything like that? And if it worked.

Also i good sleep aid - I've started taking Melitonin (sp) but it makes me have crazy disturbing dreams. Know of anything else ?(herbal) ||24.92.209.24||reg|| Z||000001||Temple||08-08-2000||11:25 AM||dtkb@gpcom.net||I have taken prozac off and on for years - if you need prozac you should use the real thing and it isn't difficult to get a prescription for it. St. Johns wort does work as an anti depressant but should not be substituted for the real thing when needed. Prozac does have an effect on sleep but what effect depends on the person.||216.170.51.84||reg|| Z||000002||missgalaxy||08-08-2000||11:47 AM||missgalaxy@hushmail.com||Thanks Temple -

Do i just go to my regular doctor for a prescription?? And how do i know if he'll prescribe it to me?? and how long does it take to start working?? ||24.92.209.24||reg|| Z||000003||Temple||08-08-2000||12:12 PM||dtkb@gpcom.net||Yes, just go to your regular doctor - if you are suffering from depression, symptoms are chronic fatigue, loss of appetite, insomnia, feeling like crying all the time, loss of concentration etc. - just tell him how you are feeling. He may give you prozac, zoloft, paxil or any one of a number of meds but they all work about the same. Prozac for me started working within a few days but can take up to two weeks. You will experience weight loss, loss of sugar cravings etc.
Let me know how it goes for you. Also, don't be afraid to tell the doctor that you feel that you need a prescription - I specifically asked for prozac and there was no problem.||216.170.51.84||reg|| Z||000005||tnheygirl||08-08-2000||12:17 PM||tnheygirl@ziplip.com||This is the stuff. Just as good as Prozac in my opinion. Boosts serotonin

SAM-e
GNC,Health food stores

Principal Uses
There are five principal conditions where SAM is used: depression, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, liver disorders, and migraine headaches.

Depression
SAM is necessary in the manufacture of important brain compounds such as neurotransmitters and phospholipids like phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylserine. Supplementing the diet with SAM in depressed patients results in increased levels of serotonin, dopamine, and phosphatidylserine. It improves binding of neurotransmitters to receptor sites, which causes increased serotonin and dopamine activity and improved brain cell membrane fluidity, all resulting in significant clinical improvement.

The antidepressive effects of folic acid (Vitamin B6) are mild compared to the effects noted in clinical trials using SAM. Based on results from a number of clinical studies, it appears that SAM is perhaps the most effective natural antidepressant (although a strong argument could be made for the extract of St. John's Wort standardized to contain 0.3 percent hypericin) Tables 45.1 and 45.2 [ following tables ] summarize double-blind studies comparing SAM to either a placebo or an antidepressant drug.

Most of the studies cited in Table 45.1 and 45.2 used injectable SAM. However, more recent studies using a new oral preparation at a dosage of 400 milligrams four times daily (1600 mg total) demonstrate that SAM is just as effective orally as it is intravenously. SAM is better tolerated and has a quicker onset of antidepressant action than tricyclic antidepressants.

The most recent study compared SAM to the tricyclic desipramine. In addition to clinical response, the blood level of SAM was determined in both groups. At the end of the 4-week trial, 62 percent of the patients treated with SAM and 50 percent of the patients treated with desipramine had significantly improved. Regardless of the type of treatment, patients with a 50 percent decrease in their Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D) score showed a significant increase in plasma SAM concentration. These results suggests that one of the ways tricyclic drugs exert antidepressive effects is by raising SAM levels.

In addition to generalized depression, there are two conditions associated with depression where SAM produces significant effects: the postpartum (after pregnancy) period and drug rehabilitation. SAM's benefits in these conditions probably stem from a combination of its effects on brain chemistry and liver function. In the study in postpartum depression (after-pregnancy "blues"), the administration of SAM (1,600 milligrams per day) produced significantly better mood scores than a placebo group. As for the use of SAM in drug detoxification, SAM (1,200 milligrams daily) significantly reduced psychological distress (chiefly anxiety and depression) in the detoxification and rehabilitation of opiate abusers.

Yes Temple, those are definately the symptoms i am having. Last night i got in bed at 9:00, didn't fall asleep until 12:30 and i took 3 melatonins. I haven't eating a substantial meal in 3 days and have had numerous break-downs at work (crying, etc.)
Thanks, i'm gonna try to make an appt today.
Ps do you remember how much the scipt was? I do have insurance. Won't that pay for most?

Tnheygirl - i'll check that site out too after work. Thats for the info.||205.188.196.39||reg|| Z||000008||tnheygirl||08-08-2000||02:22 PM||tnheygirl@ziplip.com||Miss G-Wait what are you on? Gear wise? I would have to say if you had the slightest tendencies toward being meloncholy-sp? before being on the juice. The AS can cause this to become more extreme. I am, i hate to say it a different person on this stuff at least 50% of the time. Very emotional, very very agressive and could cry at the drop of a hat and Brutusxvx says just all out mean!
Just a thought if your on a cycle and will be off soon don't go running off to get scripts for prozac. Let your hormones level off first. Just my .02

I took Prozac for awhile and it messed with my sex life. I didn't want my husband to touch me... You might want to consider this, if you are married! Cause it can cause more trouble. It may not do the same to you. Everyone is different!!! You might want to try 5-HTP, it is suppose to increase your serotonin level. You can get it at a Health Food Store.
Good Luck, just like Tnheygirl said; you might want to wait till your hormones level out!!! Just my .02 cents...
Also, check out Valerian Root!!

I've done prozac, zoloft, paxil...If you are in any way impulsive Prozac is not a good choice. Zoloft made me fuzzy and Paxil effected my memory...I was clearest on Prozac and had the most energy,,Welbutrin is a new drug that is out and it is highly regarded with the fewest side effects. I'd like to suggest getting a good therapist before going the drug route though. There aren't any long term studies on the effects these drugs have on the body. A therapist can usually help you target what's going on and I agree with giving valerian root a try for sleeping and avoiding all coffee, tea and chocolate. I hope your feeling a little better.

Thanks for all the advice.

A couple people atwork told me to just get some "happy campers" for the nature food store instead of getting a script.

Any time I've hit a depressed state which is infrequent but they do come -hmmm, not since I've been lifting and eating right - but anyway. I think for mild depression its a good choice. More serious troubles might need a Doc's advice. HOWEVER - i think the whole medical world is getting WAY to happy with prescribing these types of drugs. I know a gal who got it over the phone!!! WHAT??

||216.244.31.4||reg|| Z||000015||Temple||08-08-2000||09:50 PM||dtkb@gpcom.net||Yes, the doctors are pretty free with these drugs but I think the reason is that they know how difficult it is for a depressed person to seek help and they want to make it as easy as possible. Also, there are no really bad side effects to them and the benefits far outweigh any negatives. Anyone who is truly depressed should not try to self medicate but should get their butt to a doctor IMHO.||216.170.51.78||reg|| Z||000016||skydancer||08-08-2000||11:17 PM||skydancer43@hotmail.com||Temple -point taken and I agree about if you are having trouble you should consult your Doc. As far as the no bad side effects all I can say is YET...how many things have been deemed a wonder drug only to be yanked off the shelf a few years later on?

I'm not saying that antidepressants aren't doing anyone any good, or if you are experiencing depression you shouldn't take anything to help your chemical imbalance. I'm just saying proceed with caution.

dirtyratt||166.62.191.99||reg|| Z||000019||IronChick||08-10-2000||05:08 PM||fit1@hotbot.com||MissG - three people close to me are clinically depressed and on meds. One is on the new drug that was mentioned, Wellbutrin. He is getting good results, but beware that there is an adjustment period where you have some pretty bad side effects. Severe nausea, dry heaves, headaches, severe sweating...if you can get thru that (it was a few days for him), it levels off and results are nice. The other two have used Prozac and experienced the decreased sex drive problem, too. All drugs have side effects, just have to find the one with the least for you. The Drs. try different drugs to find the one that works for you, so don't think about which drug you want - it's gonna depend on what agrees with your body. There are tons of them - some of them you never even hear mentioned - only the more popular ones. You really should consider seeing a psychiatrist - this is all they do, where an MD generalizes. Just my opinion, but I wouldn't trust a regular MD to have this expertise. The psychiatrist will ask you all kinds of questions about behaviors and emotions, etc. in an effort to come up with the right med AND dosage for you. It's a lot of guesswork in the beginning. St. John's Wort works for MILD depression, but you have to figure out the right dose and make sure you take enough of it. The people that I know tried this first, but it was not controlling the problem for them. BTW, I may have mixed you up with someone else, but if you are the one who is trying to quit smoking - Wellbutrin is prescribed for that purpose, too. ||192.135.215.20||reg|| Z||000020||missgalaxy||08-10-2000||06:36 PM||missgalaxy@hushmail.com||Ironchick:
i'm not the one that was smoking. Thanks for all the info. I was wondering if my reg. doc could give me a script or would he refer me to a psyc. I don't know how all this works, i just know i need help. I know myself and i know i am in need of help. I cant concentrate at work, i cant remember what i was doing 2 minutes prior. Cant sleep, cant eat, people at work tell me i look like hell. Normally i use ECA in the am or thermadrene, diet fuel or something to get me goingin the am, now i'm just straight up wired without anything. I just want something to calm me and maybe take my mind off things a little. Like i've posted before, i got a doc appt. tomorrow morning, i'm just gonna tell him like Temple said to do - excatly how i feel and that i think i need something.I've been depressed in the past like everyone gets from time to time, but this is soo different. This is not healthy for me. I hope he helps in some way. I will post tomorrow on what happened. Thanks ladies.

A big factor in this is that i haven't been getting enough sleep, rest. I haven't slept through the night all week. I told him some of my situation and he says since it is something that will get better with time that he would like to prescribe something to calm me during the day and somthing to help me sleep. He gave me Zanex for the day .25. and for sleep he gave me Ambiem 10mg. I think if i can sleep i might be able to fuction a little better. Plus a couple things happened today to make my situation a little easier.
