Over time, the stimulants help you to burn more "fuel" by increasing your metabolic rate.  Where you work shouldn't matter. It also causes the release of norepinephrine from the nerve terminals, which likewise act upon the adrenergic system.  At the beta2 receptor norepi and ephedrine act to increase the activity of cAMP, an intracellular messenger, which increases the activity of the cell.  On adipocytes this activation increases lipolysis, to release free fatty acids.  The E/C combo increases metabolism approximately 3%.  This increased energy expenditure and liberation of fatty acids increases the use of fatty acids for energy.  There is also a temporary increase in the conversion of T4-T3, thus increasing metabolism further.<P>Caffeine's role is that of adenosine inhibition.  Adenosine is a chemical that binds to adenosine receptors and reduce norepi output from the nerves, so blocking these receptors increases the norepi liberation.<P>Aspirin's role is prostaglandin inhibition.
