Ok, I am an ex college offensive lineman, I have been out of the sport for about 5 years, not including the year of Arena ball I played. I weigh about 280 and am not way out of shape, but pretty damn close . I want to drop to about 230 but still want to increase lean muscle mass and strength. What do you guys recommend. Do you think supplements like Creatine would help me achieve what I want to do or do you think I should skip the weight training and just focus on cardio until I get down to my desired weight. I am kinda a newbie to all the new shit that's out there, every thing I used to take is off the market now or has changed. In the past all I was concerned with is getting huge but since my football carrer is over I want to shed the pounds.

Although others may flame me for saying so, I am yet to be convinced that you can lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. I think you should get your weight down first and then focus on muscle gain.

Do not skip weight training to lose weight. Incorporate your weight training into you cardio regiment.

You probably don't want to use creatine, because it can cause bloat. The most important thing you can do to cut fat is to eat clean. Six meals a day which include some protein, carbohydrates (complex) and fat in every meal. This includes meal replacement powders. (MRP)

Resistance training also burns a ton of fat. I know so many people that try to lose weight and all they do is cardio. Believe me they don't look as good as those incorporating both.

The other reason for not skipping the weight training is that you will surely lose muscle, if you just stick to cardio.

Lizzy is right though. Focus on losing the weight first. Try to do cardio approximately 5 times per week at first. If your really out of training, start with 15 minutes, add 5 (at least) more each week on your cardio. By your fourth week that will be 30 minutes 5 times weekly, which is pretty good. Make sure when you train for cardio, you're using interval training, and try to get to 85% max heart rate a couple times during your sessions. This can be accomplished by increasing speed or resistance during training. I lost a lot of weight by using the elliptical trainer myself. Then, after about 3 or months of that, I started spinning 3 to 4 times weekly for 45 minutes to an hour.

Spinning forces you to sweat like crazy and the weight melts off.

In the beginning, you'll probably want to do your weight training on the same days as cardio. A simple plan which you can get much advice about on this board, or the training board. Once you start to lose the fat your muscles will be become more defined, but it's tough to have huge strength gains while losing a ton of weight.

You'll probably tend to make some gains then, go back a little as you lose some serious poundage.

Once you hit your weight and bodyfat goals. You can develop a more extensive weight training plan, where you'll cut down the number of days you weight train, and possibly cut your cardio down to about 3 days a week, or even less, but that quite a way down the road.
