I\\'ve written a lot recently about how steroids are common in almost every sport out there. But, would you believe that they are becoming common in the sport of Golf too!<\/p>\n

The sport of golf has always been considered clean in terms of illegal performance enhancing drugs. But now there is reason to believe that players may be using steroids, HGH, and other drugs in order to boost their performance.<\/p>\n

\"image\"<\/a> There may not be a more relaxed or more peaceful sport than that of golf. Marked by its beautiful courses around the world and laid-back nature, golf seems to be drawing more and more people into the game every year. And it is the breed of people golf attracts that gives it the clean-cut image that we have all come to associate with the sport. The well-off, country club types that tend to dominate have given golf an identity that is a cut above the rest.<\/p>\n

Illegal performance enhancing drugs that are present in just about every other sport (except for maybe croquet) just aren\u2019t seen in golf. And why would they be? Golf is a game that revolves around skill, finesse, and touch. At least that\u2019s what I used to think until just recently. That\u2019s because now, there are rumors that many golfers across the world, even including some in the Professional Golf Association (PGA), are taking performance enhancing drugs in order to boost their play.<\/p>\n

These rumors have become so prevalent that golf\u2019s biggest star and maybe the greatest player ever, Tiger Woods, has started calling for tests to be done on the PGA tour. Woods doesn\u2019t believe that usage of steroids or any other performance enhancing drug has reached a crisis point yet but he did say, \u201cI think we should be proactive instead of reactive.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to add that, \u201cI just think we should be ahead of it and keep our sport as pure as can be. This is a great sport, and it\\'s always been clean.\u201d And at what point does Tiger think that the PGA should begin to perform this testing? ASAP! Woods expressed this sentiment with regards to when testing should start by saying, \u201cTomorrow would be fine with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Tiger Tiger has become a beacon in the sport of golf not only for his crowning achievements on the course, but for what he can do off of the course as well. The man who began his professional career as a gangly, 155-pound young man has added thirty pounds of muscle naturally over the last few years despite playing a rigorous PGA tour schedule. It\u2019s even been said that he can bench press over 300 pounds and squat over 400 pounds. Not bad for a 185 pound golfer who doesn\u2019t use steroids, huh?<\/p>\n

But the physical golf phenoms such as Tiger Woods may become a dime a dozen in the next few years do to a growing amount of juicing that is going on in a sport that was once considered nothing more than an enjoyable pastime. The history of a sport that lends itself to over five centuries of play beginning in the scenic hills of Scotland may soon be adding another chapter to its pages: The Steroid Era.<\/p>\n

The temptation to do roids and other performance enhancers derives from financial awards according to US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy. He said, \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of money out there.\u201d Enough so that he doesn\u2019t think that it would be too far-fetched to see more and more golfers in the future using drugs to give themselves an extra advantage over the competition.<\/p>\n

The Australian player also believes there\u2019s a strong possibility that some of the older players on the Senior PGA tour might be using Human Growth Hormone (HGH) to stay at the top of their game. Ogilvy and Tiger Woods aren\u2019t alone in their concerns though as other members of the tour seem to share a common belief that there is indeed some usage of performance enhancing drugs going on within the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joey Sindelar, another PGA pro, thinks that the use of steroids may be visible in the mere appearance of the golfers themselves. He says that more huge guys are starting to pop up in golf which is making him suspicious. People he likes to refer to as baseball-type guys.<\/p>\n

So all of this speculation of players using steroids and HGH on the tour has to make some people question why people are juicing. After all, golf involves so much skill it\u2019s ridiculous and if being good merely required big muscles and strength then tons of bodybuilders, power lifters, and football players would be hitting the course more often.<\/p>\n

However, anyone who thinks about the subject for any amount of time at all will come to the conclusion that bulking up for golf is done with the intention of improving one\u2019s drive. It\u2019s not hard to see the advantage that a player gains when they can knock the ball 330 yards across the fairway instead of 270 yards.
\nAmerican Joe Ogilvie (not to be confused with Geoff Ogilvy) echoed the bulking up for longer drives theory when he weighed in with his thoughts on the subject. Ogilvie said that, \u201cWe market the guys who hit it 300 yards. If that\\'s your message, and people see that beginning at the high school level, I think as a tour it is very naive to think that somebody down the line won\\'t cheat. As it gets more popular and the zeroes continue to grow to the left of the decimal point, I don\\'t think there is any doubt that there will be cheaters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond just the pure marketability of players who can hit the ball 300 yards or longer is the obvious performance aspect of being able to do so. Golfing legend Nick Price talked about what an advantage like this means to a player\u2019s future by saying, \u201cThere are guys out there who are 16, 17 years old who hit the ball 280 yards, and they\\'re not going to make it on the tour any more hitting it only that far,\" he said. \"They certainly won\\'t be stars.\"<\/p>\n

Steroids and HGH aren\u2019t the only substances being used by players in order to improve their chances on the course though. US golfers Joe Durant and Jay Delsing made this clear when they told someone in an interview that they had heard of other pros on the PGA Tour taking banned drugs known as beta blockers. Beta blockers are useful to golfers because they help people to control their emotions and anxiety by blocking the actions of adrenaline in the body.<\/p>\n

There is another group of golfers though who don\u2019t believe that the use of beta blockers, steroids, and HGH will ever become a problem in golf. Tour veterans like Fred Funk think that the sport is safe simply due to the fact that professional golfers police themselves.<\/p>\n

He is backed up by American tour commissioner Tim Finchem who says, \u201cIn golf, a player is charged with following the rules. He can\\'t kick his ball in the rough, and he can\\'t take steroids. We rely on the players to call rules on themselves, and if you look at our tour over the years, many players have, to their significant financial detriment. That is the culture of the sport.\u201d<\/p>\n

But despite the \u201cthat will never happen to us\u201d line of thinking that has been spread among various players and tour representatives, the majority of the golf world is open to the possibility that there are those who use banned performance enhancers. Fan favorite Greg Norman let his voice be heard loud and clear on this matter.<\/p>\n

Norman thinks that the PGA drug testing methods are a, \u201cbunch of bulls#*t.\u201d He added that, \u201cIt\\'s been rumored for over 20 years, players using outside substances to help their performances. If you\\'re playing for 5 million a week, you\\'ve got to take advantage of it the best you can. It isn\\'t just steroids. HGH, beta blockers, there\\'s probably a multitude of drugs out there (in the marketplace) we don\\'t even know about.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the PGA may be slow to react to a possible steroid problem, the rest of golf seems to empathize with the Normans and Prices of the sport. The Royal & Ancient (governing body for all of golf except in the US and Mexico) is set to conduct its first ever drug test later on this year at a tournament. There is also a possibility that The R & A may test golfers at the British Open since they run the event.<\/p>\n

This all comes a year after the NCAA tested numerous collegiate golfers and found that 1.3% of them were using steroids. This may not set any alarms off but it does prove that some players do choose to reach out and try to gain any advantage that they can. And this is only college golf! Imagine how much this number might increase when players, as Greg Norman described, are playing for $5 million every week.<\/p>\n

So while we may never see golfers with huge traps, bulging biceps, and killer quads walking around the course, we can be assured that there will be those who will risk breaking the sport\u2019s rules in the pursuit of a longer drive. Especially when there\u2019s millions of dollars on the line.
