However, it does appear as if one chapter of the BALCO saga has finally ended as the world-renowned chemist and EliteFitness.com Platinum Member Patrick Arnold received sentencing for his role in the case. Arnold learned on Friday that he will be spending three months in prison and an additional three months on house arrest after he\u2019s released from his cell. His prison term is set to begin in late September and he must turn himself in by Sept. 19th to begin serving his sentence. He has also been ordered to participate in a drug testing program and avoid any contact with the previous BALCO defendants.<\/p>\n

Arnold\u2019s term is the result of accusations brought down on him by federal investigators alleging that he synthesized three near-steroids that were made with the intention of helping professional athletes avoid detection by drug tests. The three drugs that he either developed and (or) marketed were Desoxymethyltestosterone (DMT or Madol), Norbolethone, and the world famous tetrahydragestrinone (THG).<\/p>\n

Other charges that were brought up against Mr. Arnold to make a case included the claims that he was at the heart of a steroid distribution ring in which he sent THG to various parts of the globe and didn\u2019t properly label the designer drugs that he shipped out which, in turn, implied an intent to introduce misbranded drugs in United States commerce.<\/p>\n

Patrick Arnold didn\u2019t deny the charges that were presented against him and pled guilty to being a part of the distribution ring. He also readily admitted that it was indeed himself who developed the designer drugs that were being distributed by BALCO to its elite clientele.<\/p>\n

Many believe that it was this elite clientele that led to Arnold being at the center of the investigation. Names such as Barry Bonds, Marion Jones, and Jason Giambi have dominated the headlines for months and it seemed as if it was only a matter of time before anyone and everyone who was connected with the BALCO case was brought down.<\/p>\n

For Arnold, his time came after an anonymous source sent a syringe filled with the undetectable THG to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. The anonymous source would later be identified as a big-time track coach named Trevor Graham. After obtaining the sample, authorities had what they needed to raid Arnold\u2019s Champaign, Illinois lab.<\/p>\n

Once evidence from the lab was gathered, prosecutors were able to use a combination of the drugs and Arnold\u2019s expertise to mount a legitimate case against him. As federal prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memorandum, \u201cThe defendant is a sophisticated person with a strong background in chemistry who applied his talents to the dangerous, untested and illegal manufacture and distribution of experimental \\'designer\\' steroids to athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Refusing to stop with just these statements the prosecutors continued by saying that Patrick, \u201cbears a heavy burden for his key role in effectively polluting professional sports with drugs which were designed to cheat the system and gain an unfair advantage.\u201d The judge in the case added his two cents by telling Arnold in the courtroom, \u201cIt\\'s a really destructive path you\\'ve been on, and a very serious crime you\\'ve committed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Patrick But a more accurate description of the true character of Patrick Arnold was laid out by his attorney, and my friend, Rick Collins when he stated in a sentencing paper that, \u201cIn assessing the various key players in the BALCO case, Mr. Arnold stands out as an anomaly. He was drawn into the conspiracy for reasons not driven by greed, promise of reward or even by misplaced loyalty or friendship, but by an intense - albeit ultimately misguided - scientific passion.\u201d<\/p>\n

This statement seems to more accurately reflect what Patrick Arnold is really about and if one doesn\u2019t believe me or Rick Collins then they can look to Arnold\u2019s background as evidence. And if one does this, they will find that Pat is nothing like the criminal that the prosecution tried to make him out to be in his trial.<\/p>\n

\"image\"<\/a> The University of New Haven graduate began his illustrious career by opening a company called LPJ Research in Illinois and quickly rose to the top of his profession with his brilliant work. He is credited with introducing a number of top-notch supplements to the market including ipriflavone, choline, and chrysin.<\/p>\n

Arnold is also one of the world\u2019s most respected experts in muscle development and hormonal enhancement and has even earned the nickname \u201cThe Father of Prohormones\u201d. His most notable development came in the form of androstenedione (andro) as it was used by Mark McGuire to fuel his home run record-breaking season in 1998.<\/p>\n

Not only is Patrick good in the lab but his pen isn\u2019t too bad either as he\u2019s written numerous articles on the subject of muscular development. His writing has appeared in major publications such as ESPN Magazine and Muscle and Fitness. He\u2019s also a very active forum poster on EliteFitness.com and has used the name \u201cpa1ad\u201d to post over 700 messages on our boards.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the greatest attribute to him though is the fact that he co-founded a non-profit organization called United Supplement Freedom Association to help preserve safe sports supplements. In addition he also opened the Prohormone Research Organization, which is a lobby group that provides legislators and government officials with factual scientific information on the subject of prohormones.<\/p>\n

Obviously, it can be seen that Patrick Arnold is a definite positive to the muscle enhancement industry and is very accomplished in the field. This is why many are anxious to see what he will do once his sentencing is up and what other developments he will make in the way of hormonal enhancement.<\/p>\n

Whatever it is though, we can probably guess that it won\u2019t involve anything dealing with the design of drugs intended to help athletes slip past testing after he\u2019s already dedicated a large portion of the past couple years defending himself. We can especially be sure of this after what he said outside of courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement to the press Arnold reflected, \u201cI\\'m very regretful for what I\\'ve done and especially what it has precipitated in sports and society. Now, more than ever, I\\'m very much against sports doping. I do believe there should be a level playing field, and this whole thing needs to be addressed.\u201d He added, \u201cIf there\u2019s anyway I can help to facilitate that, I could. My hope for the future is that I definitely am going to do my best to run my business legitimately and to live my life for the betterment of society and lead a nice, clean life.\u201d<\/p>\n
