A recent CBS News investigation targeted firemen and cops that have been suspected of doing steroids and found that usage may be even greater than originally thought among the two groups.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It often blows people\u2019s minds to think that there are public servants out there who are using steroids. Especially when many of these public servants happen to be police officers. The same police officers who are often called upon to raid houses and arrest other people who are suspected of using or selling steroids. And, despite the injustice in the situation, the fact that there are many cops who are using steroids is nothing new to most people see our article Dopers in Uniform: Cops on Steroids<\/a> from a few months ago. However, the possibility that steroid use has now become widespread among firemen is something that will definitely raise an eyebrow or two.<\/p>\n

This was discovered after CBS News performed an investigation into the matter. And their results? Many firemen in the Phoenix and Mesa, Arizona areas are juicing on the job. The process began when they started digging though records and information that dealt with firefighters in the Phoenix and Mesa areas. But not just any firefighters. They began checking the records of those who were suspected of using steroids by fellow colleagues.<\/p>\n

\"firefightersThe news channel claimed that their investigation turned up reports citing that some of the firefighters who were suspected steroid users had domestic violence troubles. One of their examples was a Mesa firefighter who was given a protective order from his ex-wife after a few disputes between the two got physical. This, in turn, prompted a CBS News lecture of how steroids can cause roid rage and possibly even keep these firefighters from performing their job correctly. They also seemed to suggest random steroid testing for fire departments within the Mesa and Phoenix areas would be a good idea.<\/p>\n

But this doesn\u2019t seem too likely because, as a Mesa fire representative said, \u201cWe\u2019re not allowed to do random drug testing.\u201d In fact, random steroid testing within some fire departments may never take place. This can be attributed to a Mesa fire captain who took the matter all the way to the State Supreme Court. The court ruled that the random testing was violating the civil rights of the firemen in the department.<\/p>\n

While testing may not come about in some fire departments, many in the Phoenix and Mesa areas believe it is imperative that police officers be tested for steroids. And this takes us back through a familiar debate over the past couple decades. It also takes us to the second part of the CBS News investigation which attempted to answer the question of whether or not steroid using cops are prone to excessive force and violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An anonymous and former police officer in the area gave his thoughts on the issue as he said, \u201cI think officers use it. They get away with it. There\u2019s no screening for it. It actually changes the officers out on the street. They\u2019re more aggressive, not enough patience out there.\u201d He went on to add that, \u201cWhether it\u2019s a family member of one of the officers or just someone on the street on a call that they respond to, someone is going to get hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not the only one who seemed to express this sentiment as a couple of doctors chimed in on the subject. A doctor who specializes in hormone treatment named Alan Miles definitely seems to believe excessive force among juiced police officers could be a problem as he said that steroid users can lash out without warning.<\/p>\n

The other doctor, Patricia Treharme, made more of a comparison between firefighters and police officers who use steroids as she said, \u201cI don\u2019t see where it\u2019s going to impair the firefighters where it may impair the ability of the police officer.\u201d She also believes that, in the case of the firemen, the issue of them using steroids is irrelevant and stated, \u201cWhat I\u2019m interested (in) is can these people safely perform their jobs?\u201d<\/p>\n

Considering how physically demanding a fireman\u2019s job can be, it would seem that they could not only perform their job, but possibly even do it better. Fireman are sometimes put in situations where they need to carry people, break down doors, or even move heavy blockades to save someone. The use of steroids could definitely help a fireman to better perform these physical feats. Plus it\u2019s difficult to foresee an event of \u201croid rage\u201d where a fireman would suddenly lash out against his fellow firemen and start spraying them with the hose.<\/p>\n

But the picture isn\u2019t quite as clear with police officers as there have been numerous cases of cops who are linked to steroids using excessive force on the job. Cases like that of a suburban Atlanta police officer named James Batsel IV. In 1993, his story gained national attention when it was reported that he belonged to a group of police officers who used steroids and burglarized stores in the Atlanta area. One of the burglaries resulted in him shooting and killing a nightclub owner. He would later go on to blame steroids for the murder.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to say whether the murder was really a product of the steroids that Batsel IV was using or whether he was predisposed to violence long before he first began juicing (which is more likely the case). All that is known for sure is that people have been using incidents such as these to cry for more random steroid testing among police officers. Especially in the Mesa and Phoenix area where the CBS News investigation took place. Some police officers in this area have been testing positive for anabolic steroids and many more have been ordered to take tests.<\/p>\n

The news channel says that this is just the beginning and there is currently a much bigger investigation going on throughout the whole Phoenix Valley area. It will definitely be interesting to see just how far this testing will go in the future. Will it eventually extend beyond cops and firemen and go as far as to test post office workers? We\u2019ll see.
