And so, once again, federal regulation takes another bite out of our individual liberty. Joe Barton, R-Texas.<\/p>\n<p>While protecting pro sports is important, stopping children from using those chemicals is even more important, House members said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Young athletes are using these drugs in the belief that they can become great in their sports and gain a lot of money,&quot; said Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va. &quot;However, in addition to risking disqualification in their sport, they also risk stunted growth, infertility and other long-term health problems and even death.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Blah. Blah. Blah. We\\'ve heard it all before - if steroids really killed you, I think we would all be dead by now.<\/p>\n<p>Congress has taken an increased interest in the issue this year in the wake of reports of steroid use among athletes. A federal grand jury in San Francisco has indicted four men on charges of illegally distributing steroids, including the personal trainer of Barry Bonds.<\/p>\n<p>Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig has asked the union to renegotiate its contract to include a tough steroids policy, and union chief Donald Fehr has left open the possibility of doing that before the players\\' collective bargaining agreement expires in December 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Now that bills have passed in both the House and Senate, the bill will be on the President\\'s desk within 2 weeks to be signed and the ban would become effective 90 days thereafter. Though unlikely, it is entirely possible that an emergency enactment will take place -- i.e. all designer steroids would become illegal upon signature of the President just 14 days from now.<\/p>\n<p>What this means for you is that after 90 days and perhaps much sooner, you will no longer have legal access to any designer steroid products.
