I have a 10 year old daughter who plays select soccer and I have a couple questions for qualified trainers. I am trying to increase her speed over the winter, so I have her doing sprints on the treadmill. She does 15 second sprints on a 6 % grade at 12 mph for 5-6 sets. The treadmill is cushioned , so it is easier on her knees. Is this a good idea ? I dont want to overtrain her. She loves to run and is an exceptional athlete. She runs 6:30 second miles at 10 years old. Any advise would be appreciated.

If she loves to run, then there is no better training for a 10 year old than plain old fashioned running. It's fun, enjoyable, and usually done outdoors. Don't need to get her bored and walking awkardly and possibly getting shin splints which would turn her off. visit Pure Pilates in Fort Lauderdale, Fl www.pure-pilates.net

It's winter, that's why she is using the treadmill. I am hoping doing sprints on an incline will increase her speed. 6-8% grade at 12 mph for 15-20 seconds is a pretty good pace for her. I also don't let her hold on to the bars. I makes it really hard.

Yeah I would push her to hard at that age. but it honestly depends on what type of speed she is looking for and for which position, there are so many different types especially wirh sport specific goals. endurance, quickness, agility etc

This thread is pretty old. But I'll throw my .2cents in anyways. At 10 years old. The best bet for your daughter would be to find other physical activities that she enjoys. You want your daughter to be well rounded. So if she was involved in other sports that test her physically in ways that differ from soccer would be best. If she was my daughter, I would recommend basketball. She could use the hand eye coordination training that basketball provides, as well as the sprint and vertical leap work. Basketball is a winter sport as well and shouldn't interfere with soccer in the summer. Sprints on the treadmill get boring pretty fast, she would have to be pretty dedicated to put up with that. Sprinting up and down a gym floor, dribbling a basketball - scoring lay-ups at both ends = fun for a 10 year old.
