It's a great cert, however unless you're attempting to work with pro athletes, or college athletics, you won't get a great benefit just working at a gym financially. It's better for organized training such as team trainer jobs and such. IMO Tough test, too. An anatomy class would be beneficial. Also physical therapy jobs.

Hey man. Funny you should ask about this as I was just inquiring about it the other day. The price for the test, books, & seminar is reasonable compared to others & they let you take the first retest for free if you sponge on the first try. Others charge every test. I'll be attending their 10/13/01 seminar in Cleveland. What are you thinking of doing?

The anatomy class would be VERY beneficial. I breezed thru other cert tests, this one was a , good thing I was warned, I would have found out why they offer that free retake.

is this the cert where you have to be at least a college senior to take it? I hear it is very good, especially to get into coaching college athletics.
What do you fellows think about the ACE certs, just for a starters for a newbie?

Thanks.

Peace.

I was referring to the Personal Trainer Certification program that they offer. I think you have to have a degree to take the NSCA test if I remember what I read correctly.

I don't know if they require a degree now, it was not necessary when I took the test. I meant an anatomy class would help you
with muscle names, etc.

Thanks for the responses guys. Hey gymnpoppa, if the NSCA is suited more for people trying to train team athletics then what would be better for someone wanting to work at a gym as a cert. trainer and eventually become an independent contractor?.....maybe the ACSM or the ACE or NASM? See, right now I'm getting ready to start classes on my CIW (certified Internet Webmaster) and I figured I could pick up some personal training certs as well. I would really like to work in both fields and I know I will probably need income from two jobs considering the fields I'm looking at. 'Cause I know there aren't a lot of rich personal trainers or rich CIW people out there. Thanks for the response man.

Any of those three would be okay (I'd stay away from the ACE), also add NFPT (National Federation of Personal Trainers) is very good, underrated for what they offer in terms of helping you get your business off the ground.

Re: NSCA personal training certification...

As far as i know only the CSCS requires a college degree. The NSCA-pt only requires that you are cpr/first aid certified.
