Just wanted to drop in and say thank you for welcoming me to the forum. I am looking forward to chatting with all of you. Also, thanks regarding my 330 bench - that was last year. When I am done with the Masters Nationals in July I will start preping for my next meet - shooting for a 400 bench in the 148's or 165's. I will keep all posted. Also, keep an eye out as I will be posting my training journal & updating it daily...

Husserl was such a genius no? Yes, the isolated mind is a myth... I love your study. I think interviewing some Body Builders to learn how identity is shaped by the 'embodiment' and how that does alter the sense of 'self' is fascinating. PsychoAnalysis is making a come back though. Fascinating Stuff... Please, Please Tat keep me up to date. I'm beyond intrigued. Right now I"m doing grunt work for a PHD doing research for reforming education based on a new understanding of Mind and Self.
I'm hoping that my continued efforts get me a back page acknowledgement...

I referred to things like shared experience, intersubjectivity which emerges as empathy and that the original foundation of phenomenology with Husserl included things like dasein or being-in-the-world and lebenswelt or lifeworld.

I also noted that there is a commonality to the creation of gender with the oedipial complex and that defense mechanisms are also not unique to any one individual.

As Robert Stolorow put it, there is a prevalent myth of the isolated mind.

There are some constraits in my course, as it is with the open university, there isn't much point in going much beyond the materials they give you, it is just a function of long-distance learning. Otherwise I would have thrown in some Jung and the collective unconsciousness.

I love the OU, I have heard they are quite rare in that they teach psychoanalysis to undergraduates. So far, it has been quite prevalent in all the courses I have taken so far, and it is one of the interrogative themes in my social psychology course.

Of course, my research project does require a external lit review.

I am torn as to which method I should use, discourse analysis or psychoanalytic. I am going to interview one or two female bodybuilders and see how their perspective on self has changed as their bodies (embodiment) have altered.

The dualism is killing us. It will contiue too, as long as the predominant form of ummm... I'll call it 'technological knowledge' is the Dominant one. The subject/object knowledge, is how it operates. We need other 'tools,' it's a limited form of knowledge... How can U live if all you have is a hammer? Doesn't make sense. I think though there are indications of change all around us... I just don't know if as a species we have 'time'.

    Ooooh... Great question...
    Gimme like 20 minutes...
Just got home... It's different though today, then it was 20 years ago... and we are on an S curve of change. What I mean is even the nature of change is speeding up, so the predictions of even 5 years ago aren't gonna hold weight because, their estimation on the rate of change was static, that time was static, however both are speeding up. Gimme a little time, great question. The quick answer is psychoanalysis, and phenomenology is making a huge comeback in the theory of the self...
all the new studies in this postmodern society, have moved to examining not so much the self as a static object, however the self as a process or activity based on interpretation. My point is the belief is worthless... It is the Activity that a Belief is Formed that Has Value. This is the Secret of the Self...
The Activity... Knowledge as Capacity... not as Content. Our Objective Knowledge has us becoming Object oriented, and less Dynamic, However, I think this Outcome Based type of Knowledge is Evolving to understand that the Process or Activity has been overshadowed and Obfuscated.
