Natal Wins Time Magazine Honors
A better invention than the AIDS vaccine and teleportation, apparently.
by Ryan Geddes
November 12, 2009 - Microsoft's upcoming Project Natal motion control system has been named to Time Magazine's list of the 50 Best Inventions of 2009, beating out such strong competitors as the AIDS vaccine and teleportation to come in at a respectable No. 5.

Despite the fact that Natal and its 14 launch games won't be available until November 2010, Time gushes about the system's ability to remove the barrier between people and software:

"Project Natal uses several cameras, plus a highly specialized microphone and a lot of fancy software, to track the gamer's body and interpret his or her voice. You move your hand, and the Master Chief (or whoever) moves his hand. It's that simple. And that cool."

We're definitely excited to spend some quality time with Natal, which wowed us at E3 2009 and has been looking better and better each time we see it. But as much as we're looking forward to throwing a Paint Party or acting like we're bowling in front of a 360 instead of a Wii for a change, we've got to give a slight edge to the scientists at the University of Maryland's Joint Quantum Institute, who actually managed to teleport information from one atom to another a meter away (No. 6 on the list).

Also, some NASA scientists figured out how to make things levitate (No. 39).

Check out the list for yourself and then let us know where you think Natal fits among the best inventions of the year.

IGN: Natal Wins Time Magazine Honors

even a gaming website is able to scoff at this news.

With the delay of a camera based motion "controller" it's doubtful you'd even be able to play a shooter with it. lol @ Time Magazine.

Business geeks :

I'm finally getting into the whole online education thang. Startup costs are cheap, profits can be great.

So i'm gonna be selling a SUBSCRIPTION based model of basic everyday technical training videos in different languages on a site. Precursor to selling foreign language training DVDs of them when the time is right and I have good foreign distributors.

I'm gonna use this "Account Expiration Control" webhost : Joomlapolis - The home of Community Builder - Features

So for say, $50, they get 6 months to dl the .mov files or watch FLVs online. All that's great. But here's my q:

What about authors? Do I offer a profit-sharing thing, where 25% of revenue is split among the authors. Based upon titles, hours of training, videos? Credits on individual title? Do I put a time limit on the contract? 2 years, 5 years? What about payment - 3 months, 6 months?

What about administration say you get many authors. Do you hire a 3rd party company to keep accounting and payments? All that's tax deductible? Or just wing it for now with a simple 2-year profit-sharing thing you do manually - and then later on if revenue is great, hire experienced people to handle this?

Of course I would *own* all content - so if I wanted to sell the site later, there wouldn't be any legal problems. (example of similar sites: lynda.com, vtc.com)

I make aliens fight, I have no clue on this bidness stuff.

I'm currently in the market for a new job. I've been self emplo for the past year. Before my self employment I worked in a conservative office shirt and tie atmosphere.

I'm looking to work in a less conservative industry this time. A type of office job where a beard is okay and a tie is optional. Does anyone work in such work places?

I was thinking more liberal fields like publishing and apple computing or something. Somewhere where hippies rule the day. Even though I'm pretty conservative in my philosophy, I'm very liberal in my hygeine and dress.

Never sued anyone in my life. It would be for my wife, anyway. About a year ago she was having some pains in her ankle. She went to a specialist who took an x-ray, didnt see a fracture, but said "Lets just go ahead and treat it like one." Bought special insoles for her shoes, had to wear a boot for 8 weeks, etc. Nothing really worked...in fact the pain got a bit worse.

Fast forward to today and she finds out she has a huge ass lesion that has eaten away all the cartilage in her ankle and now they have to decide whether they can go in and insert new cartilage, or simply replace the entire fuggin ankle. The lesion could have been spotted easily by a simple MRI scan.

Needless to say were not pleased.

I've done face to face sales but when it comes for over the phone sales all I have done is set appointments for myself. Right now I'm selling IT/Software products. This involves calling into the company PROPERLY INTRODUCING YOURSELF TRYINg to naviagete your way over to the IT helpdesk to gather some information and then get transfered over to IT director/buyer. When it comes to talking to the decision maker I'm actually fine but introducing myself and trying to do small talk over the phone is not one of my best strengths. With that said. Can someone throw out some examples out there how to properly introduce myself and engage with a gatekeeper(receptionist) and smoothly move on to the next person.
