Hi ladies

I'm a long time listener, first time caller. :) I was a fat kid and lost most of that weight in late highschool just in time for prom and after I started doing track, field & cheer. I also used eca - ephedrine - caffeine - aspirin then. I stabilised in college at a great shape for my very short height, due to an active campus life & no freshman 15. But when I started working, driving everywhere and eating like some of my bfs, I was constantly way up and way down on the scale. This was happening every year until Decemebr 2008 when I hit my biggest adult weight. I think that yo-yoing is extremely unhealthy. After a year of slow & steady diet and lifestyl changes and eca - ephedrine - caffeine - aspirin, Clenbuterol, T3 ....I've reached & exceeded my weight loss goal. I now want a stable, fit & healthy body for the rest of my life.

stats: weight, height, body fat.

52kg or 114lb

1.59m or 5"2

Body fat no idea

- Your goals: what are you trying to accomplish? Do you have a date in mind?

My goal is health, strength and lifelong maintenance of that. I am getting out of years of too many weight fluctuations and I have found it is not as easy as I thought to keep a constant, healthy weight. I wouldn't mind gaining a bit more weight from muscle, but health is my moan goal.

- Your current training & cardio schedule: What’s your routine and how often you train?
Cardio - 3 days a week of 45min run/jog/run followed by cardio videos with weights on my wrists and ankles (a lot of the Beachbody stuff Turbo jam, Rockin Body).
Strength: Alternate 3 days to the cardio I go through squats, lunges, calf raises, arm curls with ankle/wrist weights & resistance bands(full body)
One day per weekend: Hiking trail (6km or 11km depending on weather, mood & scenery)
One day of rest.

- Your current meal plan: including how many meals, portions, what you eat and when you eat.

5 meals per day
M1 - 1/2 Cup uncooked oats or High fibre bran, 10g scoop of whey powder, banana, black coffee with 2% milk
M2 - Mid-morning seasonal fruit & small tub of non fat yoghurt
M3 - Lunch is lean meat(no oil, grilled or steamed) & high fibre salad
M4 - Afternoon 1 serving of whey or high Protein shake
M5 - Dinner always before 7. Again lean meat(no oil, grilled or steamed) & steamed/baked veggies

I often skip M2 & M4 if I'm very busy at work, or I replace some meals with shakes. (no taters). If I'm on a cutting cycle, have my eca - ephedrine - caffeine - aspirin 30 min before breakfast (6am) then at 10am, then at 2pm. I lost a lot of the weight with ketogenic diets, but they killed my stamina and I looked like a crack fiend.

Any salient medical concerns...

Noneexcept the serious cravings for Snickers and all kinds of high Protein, high carb things I get just before my TOM.:D

I like having a Protein shake with a sandwich post-workout. I only use one peice of whole wheat bread (Health Nut) with turkey and lettuce. I know you want simple carbs post-workout, but would it really make a difference if I opted for the peice of whole wheat bread (with only 2 grams of fiber) over a peice of white bread?

I always have a Protein shake post-workout to help muscle recovery, but are carbs with a high GI necessary (when fat loss is my main goal)?

Hello :) I'm new to this forum, and training in general. I've been doing interval cardio (5X/wk), and weights (3-4X/wk) for the last few months and have always eaten very healthy- low fat, low carb (but the right carbs), and try to keep away from sugar. I am not looking into body building per-say, but I would like to get into boxing eventually. I have calf muscles and quads that many men would be jealous of lol, and I am overall quite strong; my issue is midsection and overall 'soft" appearance. I am trying to get into shape so I can really focus, but I am having a few dilemmas..

I am 23, and have always dealt with my weight. Just 2 years ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which can explain a lot of my excess weight. I have been taking .075MG Synthroid since. The doc said I should notice significant increase in energy, along with obvious weight loss. Obviously I don't expect weight to just fly off without doing any work, but I have been, and still very little results along with no noticed increase in energy.

In doing research, realized that Synthroid only replaces T4... so, would taking Cytomel (T3) help in achieving my goals?

It is hard to find significant research regarding this, and I would clearly not put anything in my mouth without knowing exactly what it is, dangers, side-effects etc.
I also know that messing with hormones can potentially effect you for life... however, since I already take medication to stabilize my thyroid, should I consider taking clytomel... or am I just being dumb????

Thanks :)

Glycemic Indexes and Glycemic Loads: you should know both

Many fitness and diet conscious people these days are acquainted with the concept of the glycemic index, but far fewer people have even heard of a closely related idea, the glycemic load.

Very...

Many fitness and diet conscious people these days are acquainted with the concept of the glycemic index, but far fewer people have even heard of a closely related idea, the glycemic load.

Very briefly, a glycemic index is a measure of the rate at which a food item triggers a rise in blood sugar. However, this measure alone does not describe the full impact of that food item on blood sugar levels. One also must consider the amount of carbohydrates in that food as well, right?

For example the GI rating of 60 for sweet corn is decent. Not great, but acceptable. (Generally, 50 or less is ideal) However, it's GL load is 20, which is on the high side. This is because corn has a lot of carbs. So the GL is a product of the GI and the amount of carbs in a given serving.

So use the link below to acquaint yourself with both the GI's and the GL's of your clean diet foods so you can get a full picture of their effect on your blood sugar. :)

I do a half hour of HIIT cardio, 6 days a week, and have been for about 3 months now. I was expecting soreness in the beginning, but I'm still experiencing it, and was wondering if I'm not giving myself enough rest. From my understanding, when muscles are sore, a couple days of rest before working them again is important. Generally cardio doesn't get people sore, but since I'm doing HIIT, I'm targeting my thighs, butt, etc.intensely 6 days a week. My main goal is fat loss but muscle preservation is very important too. My muscles aren't so sore that I wouldn't be able to make it through these HIIT sessions, but I just don't want to be breaking down muscle. I really don't want to skip out on cardio more than 1 day a week, and I've found that interval training instead of steady cardio is really the only thing I see results through,, but I feel like I could be stripping my muscles with 6 days of HIIT since I'm experiencing sore muscles. Thoughts please?

Do colon detox products work, and are they safe?

Answer
No, and not always. "Colon cleansing" procedures are based on the faulty theory that fecal matter and toxins--such as parasites, pesticides, or chemicals--aculate and stick to the colon wall, causing assorted ailments. In fact, fecal matter does not cling to the colon wall, and experts have found no evidence that toxins build up there.

Colon cleansing itself carries health risks, including side effects from questionable ingredients, dehydration, impaired bowel function, and disruption of normal, protective intestinal flora. Some laxatives can even worsen heart failure or cause kidney failure, while colonic irrigation or enemas could tear the rectum. Steer clear of all of these. Your body detoxifies itself perfectly well, thanks to your kidneys and liver.

So here it is,
I've been looking at this site for the last little while, soaking up information...
I'm kinda shy on the inside, so it's took a bit of time to suck it up and make friends.
Have started to work out (weight lifting and cardio) regularly. My fiance is a huge support, works out a lot, and is in great shape. So I finally realized I owe it to myself to get healthy :)
I was never "fat", but never really muscled either. I was active as a girl, but got messed up on drugs and alcohol as a young teenager, and stopped exercising and eating well. I sta thin by having a 20 year addiction to cocaine, but I have been completely clean and sober since May 2007. So, I'm more aware of my body and my health.
Quit smoking almost two months ago too.
I'm 35, 5'9" 155, not sure how much body fat. I wear a size 6. I have been told I look athletic, which was always a bit of a laugh, considering my history.
So, any advice you can give me on my work out plan and diet would really help.
Currently so far:
Cardio (treadmill) 30 min, 3-4 x/week
3 days weights
calfs/legs/abs
shoulders/triceps
back/biceps

My eating habits on a typical day:
Breakfast:
banana
two egg whites, I egg yolk, cooked in microwave
1/2 cup Quaker Instant oats
Snack:
Protein shake
Lunch:
4 oz chicken/tuna on bed of mixed greens w/ cuber, green pepper, bean sprouts, 1 tbsp olive oil, lemon juice
Snack:
Protein shake
Supper:
4-6 oz meat/fish (chicken, tilapia, roast beef, pork)
1/2-1 cup brown rice
mixed salad greens w/ veggies: cuber, tomatoes, green peppers etc. w/ 1 tbsp olive oil/lemon juice or vinegar
sometimes I have an apple after dinner, sometimes not
Don't usually eat after 7-7:30
I punched this all into Fitday, it said about 1550 calories, Protein 40%, Carbs 30%, Fat 30%
Most of the fat seems to come from the meat, is this an issue??
My last question might be dumb, but I see on the treadmill that my optimum fat loss heart rate is 125 or so, and my optimum cardio rate is 155 or so. I'm hitting 175+ with a steady, slow jog. I'm a little worried that's too fast. Also not sure how to lower it without just walking...
Thanks all for being so inspiring!
