Figure out how much money you are working with, what's your budget for the dvd player, and then go to Circuit City or a reble electronics dealer and have them take the time to explain some of the features. If that doesn' t help clarify and you still aren't comfortable yet after speaking with someone and looking at different models, do some more research then go buy.

Personally, I think it is the stores responsibility to help educate a customer if they aren't totally up to speed on a product, features and the latest greatest available.

Go with a Panasonic. Decent price and good quality. You can't go wrong with them.

If you have componet video inputs on your TV, then get a DVD player with progressive scan....... If not, then just get the cheapest DVD player you can find. (many of the off-brands are just a re-named version of a brand-name unit)

Panasonic VHS players were incredibly reliable. Generally a good name though I'm not impressed with my digital Panasonic camcorders capabilities since digital image stabilization sucks compared to optical image stabilization.

My Panasonic AG-1980 S-VHS recently konked out. It was a $1500 deck 4 years ago. Their Colorado service center closed up. any recommendations? The motor seems to be worn out. Won't play a tape and rarely rejects the tape.

BTW...I am looking for a DVD player with an A-B repeat function that allows the user to get the repeat to work down to the exact specified frame and not freeze long on the last frame before repeating. This is for copying hot segments of o. I like the girls eyes to be open on the last frames!
