bad calf and shin pain 2 weeks still after running

die faster

New member
i dont do too much running. maybe a mile once a week or a mile and a half. 2 weeks ago i ran for about 2 miles and since then my shins and calfs are just in pain every time i run even for a few seconds. its not going away at all. does anyone know what this could be from? or how i can fix it? any help is appreciated thanks bros. btw not on cycle or anything so its not calf pumps

steve its the inner sides of my calf/ shin area,. it hurts when i stretch it, and whenever i run. theyre fine while im walking though. and yeah it hurts when i push on it but not that much. the pain is mostly when im running. i havent went running since then because the pain is still there every time i try.

do you think its shin splints? sure sounds like it is some kind of inflammation where when you run it comes on.

the calf pain thing is throwing me off though.

it is totally possible the terrain combined with poor (or old) shoes could of triggered a problem with shin splints. i've dealt with shin splints twice in my life. both times I got them from wearing poor shoes combined with a run on poor terrain (once on an uneven beach, and once running downhill). some people are just more inclined to get them, some guys get knee problems, some guys get foot problems.

the only cure for shin splints is rest. if you keep hammering away then they will only get worse. some of your running buddies will tell you to just run through it. i will tell you that i tried that both times and it just kept getting worse. others will say take ibuprofen or ice it down.. those are just temporary solutions but will not solve the problem.

also i recommend getting quality shoes and being properly fitted.

thanks steve now that ive been out walking all day its def. my shins and not my calfs. just kind of felt like my calfs cause its more on the inner side of my shins. and yeah i run outside uphill and down. i have nice nikes for running that fit me pretty good it was probably just because i ran alot more than i usually do. but now im pretty sure its shin splints. thanks man, ill stay away from running for a couple more weeks, maybe just use the eliptical at the gym since it wasnt hurting my legs at all last time

running downhill got ya.

take some time off. and then give it another go. make sure those nice nikes you have aren't worn. twist the bottom of the shoe and see if you get a lot of wrinkles, if you do then its time to buy new ones. if you leave them in your hot car they will wear out quicker.

if they still bother you after that then i would take a full 2 months off. i hate ellipitical but like i said in my thread on ellipticals if you are suffering an injury that is the only reason to use it to alleviate pressure on your legs.

you can also try massage therapy and acupuncture in the meantime to speed up bloodflow and recovery time.

also try and stick to grass and a flat surface when you come back, its really the downhills that you need to avoid which put a lot of pressure on the shin tendons/ligaments. avoid concrete (sidewalks), i cringe when i see people running on those. we didn't evolve to hammer away on a hard surface.

You're not regular runner, something must be wrong with your form. You always need to strech, warm up, and never overdue anything you aren't use to doing on the regular. Running is one those exercises that will kick your ass if you're not in shape for it and consistent with it. Take a break, ice the area, and take some kind of anti-inflammatory.

Since you don't run a lot your calves are essentially protecting themselves. You have tight calves. Apply ice 20min at a time or you could even do ice cup massage to your anterior tibialis and take 600mgs of Ibprofen every 4 hours. Also, do forget to lightly stretch your calves during the day. Another point, remember to stretch your after you take your shower before you hit the sack. Your body responds to stretching better when it is warm and relaxed. So when you stretch before bed your body relaxes in that state. Good luck.

thanks bros, i really appreciate all the advice, steve, aztec, conundrum ill def. give that a try and see if it gets any better. will the ibuprofen actually help with healing? or just the pain? i usually try to stay away from them

the ibuprofen will help with the inflammation and pain.. the ice will help with the inflammation and the pain as well.. you can do the ice for 4 days and the ibuprofen for 7-10 days with light stretching..if your still in pain after that go see a Orthopedic specialist...you may have to see your PCP and get a referral to see an Orthopedic specialist.. Let me know if you need more help.
