I AM PISSED, and I have to tell someone. I am a CFI/CCS and a bodybuilder. I'm probably the only trainer in my gym who looks like I should be one. For 15 years I train consisitantly. I learn everything I possibly can. I take all necessary college classes pertaining to exercise, chemistry, and science. I get certified with two certifications, win numerous bodybuilding titles, and all I am is ridiculed for my achievements. "All he is is drugs", "You cant be that lean and thick without steroids", and really, I'm not all that!, nor have I used as much gear as people try to say. Well, for years I turn the other cheek and only try to listen to the posistive people in the gym. Well let me share with you this experience I had today.
My gym has two levels. The downstairs is the free weight room. On the walls they had a mix of different ads for various supplements, exercises...etc. Well today the owner comes in and tears down all the posters that had unaveragely defined models. Im talking about people who looked like MuscleMedia models, and a few national middleweight bodybuilders. The owners explanation was that people are wise to these false beliefs. So he replaces them with people who looked like they never have even trained, and got lucky with some shading from the camera. Then, if that isnt enough, as the manager is taking a potential member around the gym, she takes the customer down to the free weight room and says "We are not a bodybuilders gym." What the hell is that? Correct me if I am wrong, but isnt it illegal to say that? Isnt it also illegal to take down an add just because of the way someone looks? Isnt this discrimination defined under our constitution? Or how about this, what would you say if a saleman said to you, "were not a black mans gym." Its amazing how if you change one word of this statement how discriminating it is. The gym I work out at is equipped better than any other club I have seen, so where does she get off saying that they are not a bodybuilders gym. All I am saying is that over the years all I see is more negativity to bodybuilding all the time. The gym owners are out of shape and usually don't know the first thing about exercise and physique development. Worst of all, the gym I am speaking of just opened it's 8th location and is thriving!!! Why is it that so many gyms are trying to push us out. Its like BPP said, all the trainers are fat, out of shape, and pretty much think they look good, but dont have a clue. Man, if something does'nt change soon, the only bodybuilding we will be doing is in our basements. If it was'nt for the success I have had with some people, I would'nt be able to keep this up. I know a lot of this is plain nonsense to a lot of you, but I truely love bodybuilding, and it hurts me to see the negativity that the majority of people have towards this sport. You can be like me, 5'8", 190lbs at 11% ectomorph, but the first person the average joe will try to get advice from is the 6'4" 35% bodyfat endomorph who thinks because he has a genetically large frame he is a bodybuilder, and couldnt win a show if his life depended on it. God I hope this changes. soon. It used to be all bodybuilders, no matter how big or small, all helped one another to achieve results. Now, most of the old school cry about the roids, and all the kids think that this is all it takes to look like a bodybuilder. Roids, Roids, Roids. God, I hope something changes soon. Come on people, if someone is in the gym and they look freaky roided, compliment them on their achievements to others. Anything negative will just keep pulling bodybuilding down the toilet. Say something negative it gets spread to 15 people, say something positive, and it gets told to two. Only thorugh being positive and educating will we ever get the respect we deserve. Thanks for listening, I feel better now.

I understand where you are coming from it is unfortunately a common tale.

It happens when a fringe segment of society- like bodybuilding, powerlifting and lifting in general- becomes assimilated into the mainstream.

The problem is that the mainstreams ideas, based on commercially profitable ventures, sees the fringe of their new culture as a threat. This fringe which attracted people in the first place now threatens the profits of the gym industry they have created. Most people want to see and be trained by what they see as attainable and unfortunately for most people they dont have the genetics or discipline to make real progress in the gym. So gym owners in some instances try to go with trainers whose physiques are more attainable- for the average person.

remember what the average person is5'9 and 160 lbs for a man at 12-16% bodyfat- thats pretty sad. And think of how sad guys like this get when they go to the gym and there are posters of people, who may have had some help, whose genetics and discipline were far superior. This makes them angry because after a while they realize that they will never attain that kind of physique- gym owners dont want angry clients. they want happy clients who are not asking for new or better equipment and pay on time or even better for five years in advance. They like the memeber who if the bench press machine is broken they will take it as holiday and go home. They want people who want to pay exorbitant trainers fees for a glorified babysitter- who with their 12hr fitness certification from 24hr fitness -are ill prepared to deal with real clients.
hell now i am just ranting
I guess my best advice is to change gyms- equipment is important
but a good and productive atmosphere can turn even a weak gym into training holy ground.

Its funny, I tried to open a gym, even found one hell of a location, but when I tried to get the loan the bank said I did not have enough credit. I am almost 30years old, have never fucked up once on my credit report, but I still need a fucking co-signer? What gets me is a friend of mines parents co-signed for him on a gas station. It went under, and he claimed bankrupcy to keep his house, so he works for eight years and rents out rooms. Here we are nine years later, and he gets approved for another bussiness!!!! I dont get it. He claims banckrupcy has bad credit for a few years, I keep my credit clean, yet I dont have enough?? THE US SYSTEM IS FUCKED. Any investors??? contact me. I would love to talk. [email protected]

first off... comparing "bodybuilders" to "blacks" is a joke. i never knew bodybuilders were slaves, i didnt know that bodybuilders werent allowed to use the same sinks/bathrooms/drinking fountains/seats/etc.. maybe what the owner was trying to say to her was that most of the members were not big bulky bodybuilding stereotypes. the lady was trying to sell a membership to earn her living, and to do this she felt she had to comfort the potential member. ya, she offended you maybe, but i bet the member felt at ease, and at that time, THAT is what counted. a gym owner can take down any picture they want, fuck if they want to they can put up a huge fuckin sign that says "arnold sucked!!" they own the place, it is theirs... put on some headphones and fuck what people say. i was gonna make another point, but forgot what it was, so gimme a minute.

ok, me again
forgot my other point but as for the "he is just drugs" thing... fuck it, you know the truth, what does it matter... if someone thinks drugs make you big, then let them shoot 1 gram of test a day and not grow cuz they dont train or eat right. these are IGNORANT people. why care what an ignorant person thinks? and if worse comes to worse, shove a barbell up someones ass and find a new gym to train at.

Macro,

Just because you are a freak of nature (unlike average guys like me), it doesn't give you the right to bust on guys who do not have the God given genetics that you were blessed with. I out-lift most guys at my gym in strict poundage, and out-lift the rest pound for pound (body weight). Therefore, I refuse to let you call me some kind of loser who dreams of being a monster like you, (for example).
I am not 160 anymore, but your words are still insulting. Please do not use sweeping statements unless you are omnipotent (which I know you are not).

If you didn't mean it that way, then Whoops!

Peace Bro,
Jon

Bottom line its called penis envy. Folks go to the gym why? There not happy with how they look. I am 5'3 and get to 192 off season and compete lightweight. I've come close to leaving my gym twice because of comments from all people trainers. They dog me in front of the clients with me within ear level. That makes them INSECURE. bottom line. Another guy who trains competitors who have done very well dogs me as well .wHY? pENIS ENVY. You see my diet trainer is somebody else and not him. He's jealous. lets face it we are different but the bottom line is we look like we do not because of drugs but because of balls to the walls commiment. The envy come from people who won't go through what we go through to obtain GOALS.

I AM HURT!!!
WELL AT LEAST SLIGHTLY INJURED.

I MEANT NO DISRESPECT TO ANYONE WHO TRAINS WITH DEDICATION AND INTENSITY. I ACTUALLY BELIEVE THAT A LOT OF GUYS WHO START OUT AT LIGHTER WIEGHTS CAN HAVE BETTER PHYSIQUES THAN HEAVIER GUYS. WHAT I WAS TRYING TO GET AT IS THAT THE AVERAGE PERSON DOES NOT TRAIN WITH DEDICATION NOR INTENSITY- NOR DO THEY TAKE THE TIME TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE DOING- IT IS THESE GUYS WHO WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE TAKE THAT PLUNGE INTO THEIR FIRST CYCLE TEND TO GIVE ANABOLICS A BAD NAME.
IT IS PEOPLE LIKE THIS WHO KNOW NOTHING OR NEXT TO NOTHING ABOUT THE SPORT NOR THE KIND OF TIME AND DEDICATION THAT IT TAKES FOR MOST PEOPLE TO HAVE A GOOD PHYSIQUE.
THESE ARE THE PEOPLE OF THE MAINSTREAM WHO AFTER THEIR FAILURE VILIFY BODYBUILDERS AND MAKE CLAIMS LIKE "ITS ALL STEROIDS"

AS ALWAYS
PEACE

X,

I feel your pain as I am often looked at if not treated the same way. But several good points were made in that thread.

It is true that the gym owner can do whatever they damn well please or see fit to help them earn a living.

It is true that we are the "fringe element" of gym use.

And it is true that our presence in a gym creates insecurity among other members. Thta's why they say thingslike, "It's all roids", when in reality it is dedication and intensity before all else. But the average clown in the gym doesn't have either of those, they say,"it's all roids".

Open your own gym X, or even better just block out the bullshit and stay dedicated to the thing you love: bodybuilding.

Good luck

Matt

Every point was well made and well presented, I commend you all, nice points macro. At 5'9 and 205-210lb cut, I used to get alot of that shit, and to be honest I have never used gear in my life. Thats just my choice, not flaming any of you who do, just to clear that up. The thing is bro, we are an elite group, how many other people you know can push their bodies into the pain zone, and then push it 2 steps beyond. I dont know many, most people are looking for the magic muscle in a bottle pill, and it just isnt happening. Through charity work like the Special Olympics Ive managed to turn alot of people onto bodybuilding, but there will always be scoffers, who would much rather sit in their own world of insecurity. Plain in simple, fuck them, be proud bro, most people bleed red, we bleed IRON!! All hail the Sweat Gods....

i see the same shit at my gym. we have the best free weight gym in town, but sense its a family club the try and get rid off the guys that dont look "natural." there use to be quite a few bodybuilders but now almost none. im not one but they are the best to train with, most of them go out off there way to help. sence they started turing it into a high class place the bodybuilders are being pushed out. no matter when i go its either fat slobs(watch the guy with the white shirt in lou's gym, in pumping iorn i think you know who im talking about)or its snoby bitches that think there training is better then yours because they got $. the only time i can go on wend. and fri. is when they got teen freaks running all over the place, its some fucked up high school athletic program(dont there coches do that), they always end up at the bench press or leg press and the guys who train them dont care. thats another thing the trainers cant do there job worth shit, just because you were an athlete in high school doesnt mean your certified. i watch them train fools and they let them slide with poor form. the trainers standing right there and you got fools throwing there backs and legs into everything. sorry i got carried away, basiclly i wanted to say was i see the same shit brother.

fella's I got it the complete opposite way...as most of you wish you had. feds & cops ame in January for a huge gear bust, arrested 20 dudes and started talking shit about "JARHEADS" and shit? ARE WE "JARHEADS?" I'm not a FUCKING "JARHEAD", nor are ANY of you guys on. I'm probably one of the smallest guys in my gym. At 6'1 185lbs 6.2%bf(measured yesterday), that doesn't make me "THAT" big, but shit, give me props, last year I was 160lbslbs. NOW I'M DIESEL AND DROP BOMBS!! Anyways, thats why I lift there. To reassure myself that I can do, becuase everyone in the gym has already done it before me. It's a confidence booster when a 99'NATIONAL COMPETITOR speaks to you, and says "hey bro, getting bigger..." I love that shit. Guy's at my gym do shoot gear. Everyone knows it. People talk about it, sell it, and damn near shoot on the bench before a set(that may be a little exaggerated)!! But they also know their shit...What I'm trying to say, is that BB'rs have a common bond. GET HUGE! They all help out.... everyone helps out. Need a spot? 3-4 guys will jump up. Its awesome. FOR ALL THE BODYBUILDER'S OUT THERE, THIS PROTEIN SHAKE'S FOR YOU! I know you guy's are the same way at the gym...We ARE be bigger, stronger, and get all the chicks, but everything we've gotten, we worked our ASSES off for. Some more, some less...All-in-all, we've got to stick together through thick and thin!! KEEP UP ALL THE GOOD WORK!!!
(SOB,SOB)

GET HUGE AND DROP BOMBS!!

Well I am a jarhead (slang for Marine) Fuck the cops and fuck the people who bust on body builders. I get it at work at the gym and when I went to college and yes I got it in the Marines as well. People don't like it when someone succeeds where they don't especially when they are busting their ass to succeed.

I am an Aerospace Engineer working for the military stress group on airplane mods of commercial aircraft. I sit around 22 year old engineers who got the physique of an over ripe pear. You wanna talk about jelousy and accusations.

I think it is discrimination, bagging on those who are the physically fit, prime specimens of the human race. I lend it to envy, those who wish they had what we have.

Any way I agree with everyone on this topic. Let's face we are the best of the best so fuck the rest!

BUMP!

The people who say negative things about us are the same people who are prone to taking steroids and not working out enough or eating enough to produce gains. Afterwards they claim they're hardgainers or some other BS.

I hear that so much in the gym that I've started confronting people about it. You'd be amazed at how humble and sweet people become when you get in their face and tell them how much you sympathize for the smaller guys in the gym.

xrciseink, I get the same shit here bro. even though my partner and I are the best behaved people in the gym - always put our weights away, don't make noise etc...
The words of the owner were exactly what you said "We are not a bodybuilder's gym".

I finally fixed the owner by roping in my girlfriend to train with us. She has got probably one of the hottest bodies in this town. She used to train alone, now she is happy to train with guys that are there to train just as seriously as she is. No one bothers her anymore, she trains harder and the best of all... the owner had to swallow his own words when new members started asking him to help them look like us!

By the way - I'm actually a powerlifter, I just look/train/eat/supplement like a bodybuilder.

I agree with everyone's statements, but you guys are missing the point. It is not about bodybuilding and drugs, it is about $$$$$$. You see it in the supplement industry. And now you are seeing it in the gym. Consider that less than 5% of the people have physiques that stand out in a crowd, gym owners are faced with a very narrow market if they cater to this select group of people.

Unfortunately, there are a few "muscleheads" out there that also give the rest of the "bigger prople" a bad name. I hear it all the time. They come up to me and make comments like, "geez, she's so fat that she'll need two treadmills to walk on". And then you have the guys that won't allow anyone to work in with them, but will sit on a bench for 30 minutes trying to get psyched so they can lift the weight. That really pisses me off, and I see the frustration in the faces of someone who is trying to make an effort to improve themselves but is not able to since they have no where to train.

One thing that I do which I think is really hilarious is that when some dudes think they are the shit do that, I will usually interrupt them and ask if they are done with the weights. They will ask me if I need the bar stripped, and I say no, that I will just warm up with that and do it. I usually don't see them around much after that. Granted, we're not talking about a lot of weight here.

The reasons stated is why I train at several gyms. One is a hardcore gym, where if you piss somebody off in there, they start throwing 45lb plates at you, and the owner just laughs. The other is a gym that has all the "neon" lights and the bath oils at the counter. Just depends on my mood.

Just my opinion.

EVEN IF YOU DO TRAIN WITH STEROIDS, YOU ARE STILL AT THE GYM 5 -6 DAYS A WEEK KICKING YOUR ASS. I'M SO SICK OF LAZY ASS PEOPLE THINKING THAT STEROIDS MAKE YOU BIG. THEY DON'T MAKE YOU BIG. THEY JUST HELP YOU MAKE YOURSELF BIG. IF YOU DON'T TRAIN/EAT PROPERLY YOU'RE NOT GONNA GAIN SHIT. OH YEAH, OR THE GUYS BLESSED WITH AWESOME GENETICS THAT HIT THE GYM ONCE A WEEK.

I agree with all of you and the stereotypes with BB. it is ridiculous. What gets me is that when people talk about steroids, the reaction is, "never, they are so bad for you." But what about hard core drugs and alcohol. I think that steroids are much better for you than any other drug or alcohol. Even certain people that I see in the gym. They will sit back and pour a gallon of Jack Daniel's down there throats or smoke the shit outta weed or whatever, but steroids are much worst than either of those. OK!! You are not going to make a believer outta me. Also stereotypical, I'm 5'4 and 180, last summer I did my very first cycle of just deca. Anyway these two guys(kids) 18 years old are working out and as I pass them they say " that's what steroids will do for you." I'm like FUCK OFF! First of all I was 175 before even shootin up, second of all I've been working out for 5 years now, and I didn't gain alot and didn't look roided out. Come on. It is all about knowledge and research. People think that cause you workout and are a decent size, atleast look like you have somewhat of a bb's body, they think you are on juice. Yeah, I was, but it wasn't like I grew overnight. I only gained about 3-5 lbs on that cycle. It was only deca. I have learned since then, but the point is I have done research and have been working out for 5 years. I'm also 23 and not 18. I read this board alot and do my own research on the net or any other resource I can find. TO ALL: DO YOUR RESEARCH. Everyone on here will tell you do research. Can't stress it enough.

I don't like the fact that big muscles are associated with a small brain. I think that that is incorrect a majority of the time. It takes brains to correctly plan out cycles and substances to take. I myself attend UC Berkeley which is one of the top schools in the nation, and I was also accepted into Brown, UPENN, Notre Dame, UCLA, Vanderbilt, and many more. So screw those ignorant fools

Best thread I've seen.....I think we all know the truth.....it's dedication and intensity and a desire to push ourselves to another level.

If this still bothers you, the next time some un-dedicated, average sized, un-fit jerk gievs you the "it's all steroids look", just think to yourself, "at least I don't look like you".

Good luck,

Im glad to see that most got a lot out of this thread. What I think the problem here is that what they are saying "WE ARE NOT A BODYBUILDERS GYM", is not what most gyms mean. Yeah, it is a joke to compare bodybuilders to blacks because they have been put through a lot, but those days are over. I think a better reply would be "Most of our members are not bodybuilders, but we do have all the latest equipment, and a bodybuilder would have no problem training here." That is the way it should be said. I still think they discriminate on purpose. The same gym I ranted about even pulled down my article on EAS on the PUBLIC BULLETIN BOARD. It was the only thing up there that was'nt for sale. When I asked the manager why, she said she had a couple complaints supporting Bill Phillips. When I talked to one of the trainers, he said that ALL the trainers and most of the members really thought it was informative. Again she took down something I put up because it pertained to Bills bodybuilding past. I was not selling anything, and I was only quoting what Bill Phillips has stated himself. I also made sure I altered the wording so it would not offend anyone. The worse thing is their are a million little herba-life and supplement ads by her friends, and they have specifically pointed out certain supplement companies as being scams in the past, yet none of their posts were taken off. You see where I am coming from? Public bulletin board that said "members feel free to post anything you would like." Yet the only thing not allowed is something that has to do with information. I dont sell anything in their gym, so why? Believe me, I am just one of the many saying this in my gym. You cant tell me it is not discrimination when managers and owners are using tactics like these to keep out certain people. Our constitution was written for a reason, and if owners can say "We are not a certain type of persons gym", that is wrong. I dont care what their opinion about us is, but they let us see how they are, and it is discrmination no ifs, ands, or buts about it. I'd love to see a good lawyer set these jokers up and make an example out of them, than every gym in the country would watch their step, because right now they maipulate this and that to step all over us. -Not trying to offend anyone.

I too worked out at a gym that did not accomodate the serious body builder, but catered to what I call "foo-foo" fitness. The gym had every weight machine imaginable, but was so overcrowded and seemed more like a singles bar than workout facility. I moved to a gym that was much smaller and had a large number of serious body builders. The atmosphere was so much better, I was able to really focus on my training, and I wasn't being hit on every five minutes. Their equipment was not as high-tech, but it makes you go back to basics and really dig in deep. For what it is worth, changing gyms might be an option for you, because for me atmosphere is everything. Go where people appreciate your hard work and know what it takes to get to where you are.

Keep Pumpin'!

I think alot of the negative stereotype comes from a long line of jealousy. Not every one can be big and ripped even with roids.I remember when i was 18 going in the gym and any guy that was bigger than i was in my opinion was on the juice, and i would make negative comments about that individual.
"any body can be that big"
My revised statement is this. "NO YOU CANNOT"
bodybuilding and roids are a lot of hard work. I also used to read musclemedia every month, until Bill Pussylips sold out. All the magazine is know is a big advertisement for his pussy products.Any body can be a big fat mess-o-shit if they choose to, but it takes a dedicated individual and disipline to achieve good results, especially when you are on the juice. If you ask me i think it should be rule #1, if you lift in this gym, Thou shall do at least 1000mg of anabolic steroids a week. Failure to do so will result in a termination of your gym membership. Thank you for your cooperation.
