got two torn myself...
basically you have only several options... the first is surgery, sometimes its not bad enough for surgery and the doc will recommend option two... which is strenghten the surrounding muscles... i'm sure youve seen or done the exercises before... lay on your back with a light DB in your hand arm out to the sid in an L shape and slowly raise the dumbell then lower it opposite way you started... them things. you should check out something called prolotherapy. supposedly with this it makes your cuff 110% to normal strength... i have yet do have it done, but soon i am sure.. i am kinda used to the pain now, and know how to work around it... for instance, i have flat benched just ONE TIME in 4 years.

Hey CHINO, I've got a torn labrum in my shoulder right now...it's not the rotator cuff but opted not to get the surgery as not to miss the baseball season. My doc told me that I had to strengthen my supporting muscles surrounding my shoulder. Told me to do a lot of rows, when lat pulldown, don't go behind head, just now able to do DB shoulder press, makes me feel good. But I also am telling you to use a THERA-BAND. It's a big rubber band and you can do external, and internal rotation with it...Hope I was some help.

I had my right shoulder repaired, had a torn rotator cuff then i had a level 5 dislocation, messed it up to hell, well now it's better than my left one!! Wish i had both done at the same time, my shoulder is so tight it's incredible i love it. If ya don't wanna go under the knife, then do the thera-band and shoulder horn excersises, three times a week, but remember high high reps your rotator cuff isn't meant to be a huge muscle, if you make it to big then that in itself can cause problems

Yep...been there.....done that!!
That rubber band domahickey......I used a piece of surgical hose, worked good to! I didn't listen to anybody when I tore mine, instead I started doctor shopping around getting cortizone shots every week or so....BIG MISTAKE!!!! I finally completely blew the right one out and had it repaired(I think it was called a total magnsun repair sp?) It hurt like a MF. I'm like E2, I don't flat bench at all, I use dumbells so I can better control the depth and movement of each excersize. I'll never bench heavy again. Rest and strengthen, if it hurts...back off. Surgery should be a last resort if at all possible. Hey E@, how big is your scar????

I have the same problem, and instead of laying off the flat bbell press I do bbell negatives and dbell flat presses.

Although I also give myself cortizone shots about once a week or so.

Dude,
Giving yourself cortizone injections/week, isn't that a little extreme. You are destroying the tendons that you are injecting. The doc recomends only 3 per year, it will attack tendons and soften them. I found this out the hard way, I thought by getting the shots I could lift the world....I couild until they wore off then I felt like someone had knife sticking in my shoulder. It took over a year before I could lay on that side(or even lift it my shoulder above my head) due to the abuse from the injections.
Good luck----I hope you don't experience the same problem I did.

Just a tip.....I've been working out for two years. I like to warm-up my rotator cuff PRIOR to doing my training on chest day and shoulder day. It's neat because I've had some "guys" in the gym to come up to me & ask me what I'm doing. I compete in fitness competitions and am not used to getting questioned by the "bodybuilder-type" guys. I've heard rotator cuff injuries are MISERABLE! Good luck to you in your healing!

Do NOTHING behind the head!!! I have a degree in Sports Medicine and in Med school for Orthopedics. If your shoulder is bothering you, behind the head presses and pulls agrivate the nerves in the cuff itself. Do a LOT of bent over rows. Make sure you are hitting the Posterior Delt. That's the key muscle here. Also do plenty of Lateral and Frontal Raises. Upright rows are especially good also. But, it's all in how many reps. NOT HOW MUCH WEIGHT!!!!

Ranger, my scar is one ugly mofo, i hate it, so many people i know who had the same sugury have much nicer scars, but my shoulder is more stable then theirs, well, we get what we get and i'm happy with my shoulder now.

But i do flat bench and dips, i just won't do anything behind the neck
