I'm having the same problem. Interesting that you suspect it has something to do with content. I used my hotmail account exclusively for email with friends for almost two years , however subsequent to signing up for some free stuff, some with adult content I started having trouble loggin into my account. It would get to just past the password phase and then hang once it was in the opening bin.
