As I mentioned last month, there are few feelings as exciting as placing a wager and winning. If you are like me and like gambling, but do not live near a casino, you have been deprived of one of life's little pleasures. Each time you felt like rolling the dice, playing the slots, or competing in blackjack you had to travel and arrange accommodations. All of which takes time and money. The Internet has changed all of this. Now, with a simple click of the mouse you can enter extraordinary casinos or sports books. You can even enter national lotteries from around the world. More than 1,300 Internet gaming establishments are operating in more than thirty countries...from Antigua and Australia to Trinidad and Venezuela. And, your computer can take you there. Personally, I like online gaming better than a traditional casino because there are no travel arrangements, no costly accommodations, you control the pace of the game, you can practice for free, and you can have your notes and strategies printed out and sitting right in front of you. But, there is a big problem. Of the 1,300 gaming sites, most are neither licensed nor regulated. Simply put, these unlicensed gaming sites can rob you blind. They can do as they wish without regard to you and without responsibility to the government of any country. This is an unfortunate situation; both for you and for the honest gaming site operators who run 100% legitimate casinos with Vegas style odds or better. Since I like to gamble online, I have found a few online casinos that not only satisfy my stringent legitimacy requirements, but also offer exceptional sign up bonuses for first time players, free practice play, and where I have successfully wagered myself – and won. |

Skill, systems, strategies, and discipline -- all of those things make the difference between a player who enters a casino to throw money around and one who goes in with the intention of actually winning. Sure, for most of us, gambling is entertainment -- and you probably have little intention of earning a living from playing cards -- but everyone knows that winning is a hell of a lot more entertaining than losing.
I decided that I wanted to learn how to win. And here are the strategies I used and that you can use too. Following these general strategies are game specific strategies along with the basics and links to more detailed rules for each game. The goal here, at least for the time being, is not to get rich but to get smart. Rather than being a player who has a blast at the tables and goes home broke, read on so I can show you how to plug into the game, to win money, and to become the rare kind of player whom people look at with curiosity and envy.
All of the gambling betting systems fall into three basic categories. Here they are:
Positive progression betting systems: Here, you increase your bet when you win. This is a 'let-it-ride' approach. The benefit to this type of system is that it require less capital and maximizes the return from winning streaks. (No sweat, easy ride. My favorite.)
Negative progression betting systems: Here, you increase the bet when you lose. The disadvantage to these systems is they require more capital and are usually employed to force a winning outcome following a losing streak. (Nerve-wracking, very painful when you lose. Avoid these systems if you can.)
Insurance betting systems: Here you decrease the amount of your bet when you win, usually following a high initial bet or following short 'let-it-ride' progressive wins. (Play it safe. A good compromise.)
The Martingale betting system:
The Martingale system is a very old and extremely simple system. It is based on the probability of losing infinite times in a row and is usually applied to 'even money' bets.
You start with one bet. If you win, you start again with one bet. If you lose, you double your bet. Each time you lose, you double your last lost bet. Eventually you are bound to win. When you win you would recover all your lost bets plus one unit (or chip) profit against your initial wager.
Although infallible in theory, the Martingale system requires a large bankroll, has a very low return, and is a very risky one because of the maximum bet limits imposed by the casinos. If you run out of money or reach the house limit, you can lose a lot with no chance to recover your losses.
The Paroli system:
This system is in a way the opposite of the Martingale system. You start with one bet and you increase your bet when you win rather than when you lose.
However, you will need to plan a betting procedure whereby you know how far you will let the bet build before you take it down to the initial starting bet and how much to raise after each win. This obviously depends on the type of game played and the odds of the bet.
The advantage of this system is that you do not require a large bankroll. It lets the profit run and cuts short the losses.
The 1-3-2-6 betting system:
The name of this system says it all. It is similar to the Paroli system. It is based on the premise that you can win four times in a row.
Your initial bet is 1 unit, the second 3 units, the third 2 units and the fourth 6 units. Let's assume that each unit is $10 and the odds are 1:1 - even money.
The first bet is $10. When winning, $10 is added to the $20 on the table making the second bet $30. When winning again on the second bet, there would be $60 on the table. Of this you take down $40 and the third bet is now $20. If the third bet wins, you will have $40 on the table to which you add $20 making a total of $60 for the fourth bet.
If the fourth bet wins, there would be a total of $120, of which $100 is net profit. Now all the bet with the profit is taken down and you start the system all over again at $10.
If you lose the first bet, your loss is $10. The second level loss is $20. At the third level, a loss will give you a net profit of $20. At the fourth level, a loss leaves you breaking even. Each time you lose, you start all over again at $10.
The attraction of this system is that you risk $20 at a chance of making $100 net profit. This means you can lose five times, and with one win get your money back. Back to the top.
In the mid 1950s, a group of mathematicians discovered that a "basic strategy" could be employed to reduce the house edge at blackjack, or "21," to virtually nothing. Realizing that the game could be beat Casino's have taken various precautions to protect it ever since. The publication of Beat the Dealer by Ed Thorp in 1962 began a rush to discover systems and methods that would indeed beat the dealer. Card counting, the method first described by Thorp, has been refined down through the years, and today, casinos employ various methods from shuffling after every hand to actually barring players accused of card counting from playing in casinos. The casinos like to call blackjack a game of chance, but it is as much a game of skill as anything. But becoming an effective card counter is difficult and time consuming. And unless you're planning to make blackjack your occupation, it's unnecessary. Blackjack can be played successfully by using variations on the "basic strategy" developed by that group of mathematicians in the '50s.
In blackjack, each player is pitted exclusively against the dealer. The object is to attain a total value of cards as close as possible to 21 without going over. Going over makes you an instant loser regardless of the dealer's outcome. Each player bets and then receives two cards face up. The dealer takes one of his two face down. An ace with a 10 or a picture card is an automatic winner, and pays 1 1/2 times your bet. Players with less than 21 have the option of taking additional cards to improve their position. The most basic strategies is that players hit with 16 and under as long as the dealer is showing a seven or higher. If you receive a pair of the same value cards, you are allowed to "split"--that is, break up the cards, get dealt one more for each, and play both hands. Players may also double their bets after the deal, but may then take only one additional card. Craps provides the most action of any casino game. Craps is a game of dice in which a player, "the shooter," tosses from one end of a felt-topped table to the other. If the dice total 7 or 11 on the opening throw, then everyone who bets on the pass line will be a winner. If the numbers equal 2, 3 or 12, pass bettors lose. "Don't pass" bettors win on 2 or 3, but for them 12 is a push. If the dice come to 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, the shooter needs to hit that number, his "point," a second time without rolling a 7 in order for pass-line players to win.
Michael DeMarco’s book, entitled Master Craps with Einstein explains a system that minimizes losses, maximizes wins, and is easy enough to learn that you don't need to be Albert E. to put it into practice.
"A girl I know gave me a book about Einstein; I started thinking about how he would play craps," explains DeMarco, as if this would be the most obvious consideration after reading about a genius mathematician. "Two of the things he believed in were a unifying principle to the universe -- which you could call a god -- and closed systems. I started to think of 7 and 11 as the two gods of craps. The closed system is the 36 combinations of numbers that you can get from rolling two dice. When you massage those numbers, you find out that the average number of rolls before a craps decision gets made is 3.75. If you were Einstein, what would you do with that information? You would devise a system for three rolls, which honors the 7 and 11 when they do show."
Here’s how if works, assume you are playing with $10 chips you would put $10 on the pass line, $10 on the come, and $20 for a second come bet. It's a conservative money management system in which you double every second wager. The idea is that if numbers fail to hit, your downside is limited, but, if a thrower suddenly gets hot, then your bets escalate quickly. Most importantly, since the come bet's opening roll pays off on 7 and 11, you protect your money against crapping out on the second or third roll. Click here for more details. Back to the top.
The spinning roulette wheel, with its 38 numbered slots and careening white ball, offers a plethora of wagers, none of which are very complicated. Betting on a specific number generally pays off at 35 to 1 odds. Other popular bets include a "street bet" and a "dozen bet". The shortest shots are bets on a group of 18 numbers, a color, a low number, or a high number. Payments on those bets are even money, and the house maintains its edge by not including the zero and double-zero in any of the more sprawling bets.
The beauty of this game is that you can be seated right next to a guy with a Ph.D. in mathematics and you both will have the same chances. There's something nice about that but over the long haul, you cannot win because the zero and double zero tilt the game in the casino's favor. Roulette is a perfect game for somebody who is drunk, stoned, or doesn't know how to play anything else. It's a no-brainer. You relax, put your chips on numbers, and the dealer does everything else. There is no work involved.
Larry Grossman, host of the radio show called "You Can Bet On It!" proposes a simple strategy. "You start with, say, $40 in chips," he begins. "You place one chip on each of five numbers. You give yourself eight chances for one of your numbers to hit. When the number hits, you collect 35 chips. So, on the next spin, you put four chips on each number. If you lose on that spin, you go back to betting one chip on each number and you still have a $15 profit. If you win with four chips -- the payout would be $140 -- you raise your bets to $10 on each spot. The payout there is $350. That's real fun and you are pretty much guaranteed to go home a winner for the night. But you're now putting up 25 chips on each number. Let me tell you -- as somebody who reached that point several times – you feel the adrenaline because you're getting the ride of your life; waiting to see whether or not your number hits." What if it doesn't? "You always return to the one-chip bet."
Imagine what happens if you work your way to a $25 spin and your number hits again. "You go up one more increment, to $50 on each bet," says Grossman. "Then, if you lose, you walk. You're done. Go to the bar and buy yourself a glass of Champagne to celebrate having accomplished what you set out to do: you beat a game you really shouldn't have beaten. The gods smiled on you." Then he shrugs and adds, "But even if you don't win, you get a good ride and the most you stand to lose is $40." Click here for more details. Back to the top.
Despite its James Bond mystique, baccarat is a game with simple rules. Initially, the player and the dealer are each dealt two cards. The object of the game is to get as close as possible to 9. Face cards and 10s have no value, and when the total of the cards dealt is greater than 10, the left digit from the total is dropped. For instance, an 8 and a 9 would be viewed as 7. Perhaps baccarat is considered elegant because players do very little of the work in influencing the outcome. Winning is almost entirely the luck of the draw.
That suave spy James Bond is the last person you would think a fool. But while watching a 007 movie, I was not so sure.
Despite the high-society glamour of the game, baccarat is the one casino activity that most resembles picking "heads" or "tails" on the flip of a penny. Based on how the rules are set up, after commissions the house has a 2 to 3 percent edge over the bettor. The shoe cannot be counted effectively; the cards cannot be bluffed, and, as we know, there's not a "betting system" in the world that can beat it. In other words, a losing proposition completely immune to skill, style or good looks. Click here for more details.
Wouldn't Bond be better off playing blackjack? For that matter, wouldn't anybody?
